At Home with Madison Cunningham

Maddison Cunningham is a California based and Grammy-nominated Singer-songwriter changing the way we see covers today. Her latest EP, Wednesday, is a four-track project featuring covers of  The Beatles, Radiohead, John Mayer, and Tom Waits. Over the last year, Cunningham, appeared in and helped score Sara BareillesÊ» show, Little Voice.

We at Juiced! had the opportunity to talk to Madison about her music last month.

What inspired your newest EP, Wednesday?

I started posting covers every week on Instagram, every Wednesday, hence the name of the EP. It just helped me learn other peopleÊ»s music and get more comfortable with what I wanted to  play, sing, and record. In the middle of this year, I was trying to write and having a hard time pinning something down with so many things going on all around me; I didnÊ»t know how to personalize my own story within it. I picked up the covers again and the four songs that ended up on the EP felt relevant to our time and everything going on this year. My team came up with the idea of turning it into an EP and releasing it digitally to be more accessible.

What does your songwriting process look like?

My Songwriting process is a little bit different every time. I usually come to the table with an idea, cord progression, or a phrase that will springboard the song. It’s totally different every time but it always has to start with a prompt whether it’s a subject or a melody that I want to put words to. IÊ»ve learned that if you just show up and do the work, the song will come.

Madison’s EP, Wednesday is streaming now on Spotify!
