A Trip to Outer Space with Tommy Comet

Tommy Comet is a rapper and producer from Broward County, Florida. We had the chance to ask him a few questions about his recently released EP, “Lost Comet”

Can you introduce yourself and share a little bit about who you are?

Yeah, what’s up anybody out there reading this! My name is Tommy Comet. I’m a rapper, actor, and producer from outer space but I reside in Broward County, Florida. I write all my own music and produce some of it with my friends. I also have a comedic mockumetary television show on Youtube called “Down in Broward” that I write and star in. It’s about burnout egotistical artists and their schemes to get rich and famous.

More importantly, how are you doing right now, with corona and our current social climate?

I’ve been doing relatively good during this quarantine as I know others have had it much worse. Mostly just been taking time to focus on the movement while also using what little platform I have to address the issues we have going on in the world.

How did you get started in the music industry?

Honestly, I’ve been writing music forever but I started actually recording probably around 2011 as a little Soundcloud rapper - recording off a mic at my boy’s house with little to no artistic identity. I make music independently to this day with some of my closest, talented friends such as my producer and engineer, Mavigz and another producer, DEUS X.

Who are your influences when it comes to music? Who are some of your favorite artists and what is your favorite genre of music?

Although I listen to quite a bit of rap music from every era, I also love psychedelic rock, jazz, and indie pop music. Some of my favorite artists of all time are Frank Ocean, Nirvana, Kayne West, Pink Floyd, Kid Cudi, and Tame Impala.

What was the inspiration behind your new EP “Lost Comet” What was the whole process of making the album like?

The inspiration for “Lost Comet” really came from me wanting to combine 3 of my most favorite things: jazz music, rap music, and sci-fi themes. My favorite anime “Cowboy Bebop” was a major inspiration for making the project because of its jazz based soundtrack and plot set in outer space. I even sampled a few lines from the show in the transition between “Love Me” and “Nothing New.” Some other huge inspirations for this EP were Amy Winehouse and Mac Miller. Rest in Peace to both of these incredible artists. I’ve been working on the project for quite some time without realizing it but it really is a culmination of songs that I have been making over the years. I realized they should all go together probably during the beginning of quarantine.

What is your favorite song on the EP and why?

My favorite song on the EP would have to be the last one, “Up in the A.M.” It is much more of a Doo Wop or jazz song than it is rap. It is the most personal and vulnerable song I have made about heartbreak and the lack of self confidence which I feel that a lot of us can relate to. Also I talk about anxiety and internal thoughts that happen to weigh us down, so I feel like it is a cathartic release to hear these emotions come out within the music and sing along. I wrote it so all the people who go through that can hear the beauty in the melody to portray the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel. The kids out there need something like this because a lot of the time music is all about flexing and not enough about being yourself: a human being, which can be emotional and vulnerable.

Since you are fairly active on social media, how do you feel the internet has impacted the music business?

The internet is basically the only business I have. I couldn’t be more thankful to live in this society with the internet at my fingertips because I can talk to people and fans from all around the world, places I couldn’t afford or dream to go to at this stage in my life. I got kids in countries all around the world that listen to my music and support me with everything they got and it means the world to me. I got my biggest fan living in Belgium, so Diego if you are reading this shoutout to you lil bro, you the realest!

What’s next for you in your career? What can we expect from Tommy Comet?

First things first, my fans are going to get some visuals for these song that I dropped for “Lost Comet” so expect some new music videos soon. After that, I promised the fans I would drop a contrasting EP to “Lost Comet” which will be called “Supernova!” Supernova is all the rage and hard bangers that compliment the softness of Lost Comet and show the range of my music. Also look out for episode 4 of “Down in Broward” coming soon to Youtube!
